Kiriti Gondo, Kenya

Each year as we search for coffees to include in our Celebration Blend, we come across interesting and delicious examples from East Africa, the ancestral home of coffee. This year's blend featured a syrupy bean from Kenya called Kiriti Gondo. In the blend, it combined with other coffees to create a seamless new whole, but it's also an outstanding self-drinker.

Coming from the highlands of Muranga County, the micro-climate keeps the vegetation cooler and well-respirated, giving the fruit time to mature and develop. The Gondo processing station is one of three sites managed by the New Kiriti Farmers’ Cooperative Society. 727 farmer members, averaging 250 coffee trees each, deliver cherry to Gondo.

Kenya coffee producers are renowned for impeccable processing. At Gondo, cherry is hand-sorted for ripeness and floated for density before being accepted and depulped each day. After the coffee is washed, it’s soaked in fresh water for long periods of time to stop sugar fermentation and clean the parchment. The coffee is dried over a period of two weeks on raised beds, which are carefully constructed to ensure proper air circulation and temperature control for optimal drying.

Kiriti Gondo is rich and tangy, with syrupy texture and tart stone fruit notes. We're excited to share this outstanding coffee with you, our first new offering of 2021.
